What is a Wheelchair Evaluation / Durable Medical Equipment Evaluation?
A wheelchair evaluation / DME evaluation is a clinical depiction of what a client may need in regards to a wheelchair/DME, and why a client requires this equipment to assist with his or her completion of daily activities.
I already use an equipment vendor for my wheelchair and supplies, do I still need an
evaluation?
As part of a wheelchair and/or DME evaluation an equipment specialist (Assistive Technology Professional, ATP) will often assist in the sizing of and selection of appropriate equipment. While these individuals are vital to the success of a well-fit and appropriate wheelchair, many insurance companies and physicians require supplemental documentation by a physical therapist and/or occupational therapist to describe a client’s medical necessity of the device in question. We at Rebound Home and Community Therapy partner with various ATPs in the community to support your decisions in identifying the best and most appropriate equipment for you!
